Philip Hansen Anselmo [1] (built-in June thirty, 1968[ii]) is an American heavy metallic vocalist best known as the pb vocaliser for Pantera, Downward, and Superjoint, amidst other musical projects. He is the owner of Housecore Records.

Anselmo is regarded as ane of the greatest frontmen in metal history,[iii] [4] [5] [half-dozen] known for being particularly animated and donning a machismo attitude that became allegorical of the general theme of Pantera. Earlier in his career with the ring, Anselmo took considerable inspiration from heavy metal vocalists such equally Rob Halford, singing in full head voice. However, he later became recognized for introducing a more guttural approach to the vocals.

Early life [edit]

Anselmo was built-in in New Orleans, Louisiana,[7] and is of Danish,[1] Italian and French heritage.[8] He attended many schools beyond Louisiana and Texas, the last of which was Grace King High School in the New Orleans suburb of Metairie.[nine] Anselmo'south father, Phil, owned and operated a eating place in Metairie chosen Anselmo'due south, which airtight following Hurricane Katrina.[x] Anselmo has said in diverse interviews that he was the class clown every bit a kid. At age xv, Anselmo accidentally started a burn down in his parents' house while attempting to prank his sister. The incident resulted in smoke impairment to most of the furniture and office of the house needing renovation.[11] [10] Anselmo worked on a shrimp gunkhole with his stepfather in his teenage years, and claims to accept witnessed a homo be poisoned by a scorpionfish.[12]

Musical career [edit]

In 1981, Anselmo co-formed his offset ring chosen Samhain (not to be confused with Glenn Danzig's band of the same proper noun) together with friends from around the area, performing vocal and guitar duties.[13] In 1985, he joined the band Rapid Phaze who would later rename themselves to Razor White, afterward 1 of the songs Anselmo wrote.[14] While they did have some original textile, they mainly played cover songs of pop stone and metallic bands. Around this time, Anselmo quit high school to concentrate on his musical career.[13] Afterwards most a year-plus with the ring, he became frustrated with Razor White's direction and began to explore other options.[xiii]

Pantera [edit]

Pantera released 4 albums via Metallic Magic Records, merely did non garner much attention, considering the ring was non signed with a major label record at the time. Seeking a new frontman to continue downwards a heavier path, the band's original vocalizer Terry Coat, who was primarily a glam metal vocalist, left the band. In 1987, after several meetings, the 19-yr old Anselmo was officially added to the Pantera lineup. The band was so impressed with Anselmo, that they re-recorded some of Coat's vocals for their latest release.[ citation needed ] Anselmo relocated to Texas to record Pantera's fourth album, Power Metal, which was released in 1988.

Post-obit the release of Power Metallic, the band dropped its glam image and adopted a more than casual look. In 1990, Pantera released their fifth album, Cowboys from Hell, which paved the mode towards the band'southward distinction and defined a new manner of metal known as groove metal.[15] Equally a tour unfolded to promote the band'due south latest album, there was documented portions of this tour on their first home video, Cowboys from Hell: The Videos, released in 1991.

In 1992, Pantera released their sixth studio anthology, Vulgar Display of Power, which featured an even heavier sound than its predecessor. In 1994, they released Far Beyond Driven, which debuted at No. i in the United States.

In tardily June, Anselmo was charged with set on following an altercation with a security guard when fans were prevented from getting on stage. He was released on $v,000 bail the next twenty-four hour period.[16] [17] The trial was delayed three times.[eighteen] In May 1995, he apologized in court, pleaded guilty to attempted attack, and was ordered to undergo 100 hours of customs service.[nineteen] [20]

In 1996, Pantera released their eighth studio album, The Great Southern Trendkill. Anselmo recorded the vocal tracks for this album in New Orleans, while the other members recorded in Texas, primarily due to growing tensions between Anselmo and the balance of the band. In 1997, Pantera released their first and only official live anthology titled Official Alive: 101 Proof. This album contained the two new tracks, "I Can't Hide" and "Where You Come From". In 2000, Pantera released their ninth and final studio album, Reinventing the Steel. After touring to promote the album, Pantera went on hiatus in 2001. In 2003, Pantera released their first compilation album, The Best of Pantera: Far Beyond the Bang-up Southern Cowboys' Vulgar Hits! (alternatively titled Reinventing Hell: The Best of Pantera in Europe). The anthology featured songs from five studio albums with Anselmo, and as well included three comprehend tracks. A bonus DVD was as well made, containing all of the band's music videos. After that year, Pantera disbanded over advice problems and accusations that Anselmo had neglected the ring.

Having heard of this, the Abbott brothers of Pantera (guitarist Dimebag Darrell and drummer Vinnie Paul) went on to form Damageplan with guitarist Pat Lachman on vocals and Bob Zilla on bass. Some fans blamed Anselmo for Pantera's disbanding, because of statements in the heavy metallic press.[ citation needed ] Anselmo had accused journalists of twisting the facts, publishing what they think sold best.[ citation needed ] Pantera bassist King Brown, widely known as beingness the one neutral vocalisation in the matter, blamed both sides for the band'southward disbandment.[ citation needed ]

After Vinnie Paul slammed Superjoint Ritual, proverb Anselmo could non even proceed his eyes open up, Anselmo responded and replied, "I just hear a big and lamentable yellowbelly crybaby fuckin' knowing that his meal ticket is in a different fuckin' band ... Y'all would have to know those guys to actually understand where I was coming from. They're scared of their ain fuckin' shadows. And, all that said, I wish them the all-time of fuckin' luck. I still love 'em."[21] Anselmo had engaged in a war of words with Dimebag Darrell since the disbandment of Pantera, culminating in the statement "Dimebag deserves to be browbeaten severely" in the December 2004 edition of the UK's Metal Hammer magazine. Initially, he denied making the statement, simply later changed his story in a VH1 Backside the Music special on Pantera, claiming that the comment had been lighthearted and fabricated off the tape. However, Vinnie Paul told the press that he had heard the sound files of the interview and that Anselmo had non been misquoted.[22]

In Dec 2004, Dimebag Darrell was shot and killed while performing with Damageplan at the Alrosa Villa nightclub in Columbus, Ohio. At the asking of Darrell's family, Anselmo did not attend his funeral.[23]

In a lengthy and emotional video posted on Down's official website, Anselmo described his regret over his previous behavior,[24] and has written and recorded music dealing with the loss of Darrell on the Downward record Over the Under. The band dedicated their vocal "Lifer" to Darrell. Anselmo stated that he wished to restart his friendship with Vinnie Paul, merely a reconciliation effort would no longer occur due to Paul's untimely death on June 22, 2018.[25]

In a July 2022 interview with Rolling Stone, Anselmo spoke out against Pantera and his other ring's usage of the Confederate flag, claiming that it was a error to use it on their merchandise, albums, and other promotional material. Anselmo said "These days, I wouldn't want anything to fucking do with it considering truthfully ... I wouldn't. The fashion I feel and the group of people I've had to work with my whole life, y'all see a Confederate flag out at that place that says 'Heritage, non detest.'
